Editorial Note
Why do some lists say there are 59 “one another” passages while others contain more?
The traditional number 59 refers primarily to direct Christian instructions built around the Greek reciprocal pronoun allēlōn, meaning “one another,” “each other,” “mutually,” or “reciprocally.” But that number is not an exact count of every New Testament occurrence. Some lists combine repeated commands, especially “love one another,” while others count each occurrence separately. Some count only direct commands, while others include statements describing our relationship to one another, such as being members of one another or having fellowship with one another.
Translation also affects the count. The Berean Standard Bible sometimes translates allēlōn as “mutual,” “each other,” “one another,” or in another natural English form. Conversely, several passages teach the same reciprocal responsibilities without using allēlōn itself. Therefore, 59 is a helpful traditional summary, but it should not be presented as an exhaustive or mathematically exact total.
