We cannot intentionally grow what we cannot accurately see. Awareness helps us recognize reality, understand our personality and patterns, examine the stories we tell ourselves, receive what others can see from where they stand, and bring what we discover into intentional action.
One of the great dangers of leadership is not that leaders stop thinking, but that they gradually become the only person allowed to evaluate their thinking. Because every leader has blind spots and the capacity for self-deception, wisdom requires people who can see what we cannot—and who have permission to tell us when we may be wrong.
