by John C. Maxwell
Why I Begin Here
Whenever I mentor or train someone, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth by John C. Maxwell is the first book we study together.
There is a reason for that.
Before you can become a better leader, communicator, spouse, parent, mentor, employee, employer, or friend, you must become intentional about your own growth. You can possess tremendous ability, enormous potential, sincere intentions, and wonderful dreams—but potential does not develop itself. Time will make you older, but it will not necessarily make you wiser, stronger, more mature, or better equipped to serve others.
Growth does not simply happen because another year passes.
As Maxwell says:
“No one improves by accident.”
That single truth explains why so many people remain essentially the same year after year. They want to grow. They intend to grow. They may even talk enthusiastically about what they are going to change. But wanting, intending, and talking are not growing.
Growth requires intentionality.
That is why I begin with this book. If you are not intentional about your growth, you will go nowhere. Or perhaps I should say it this way: If you are not intentional, you will GROW nowhere!
You may gain more experience, but experience alone does not guarantee growth. Some people have twenty years of experience; others have experienced the same year twenty times. Experience becomes transformational only when we examine it, learn from it, and intentionally apply what it has taught us.
Maxwell understands this. He does not offer vague encouragement to “be your best self.” He gives you a practical framework for understanding how growth actually works. He helps you recognize what is keeping you stuck, determine where you need to grow, develop disciplines that will move you forward, learn from pain, enlarge your capacity, and ultimately use your growth to help others.
“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily.”
That is where this book becomes so valuable. It moves growth out of the world of inspiration and into the ordinary decisions of everyday life. You begin to see that transformation is not normally produced by one dramatic moment. It develops through intentional choices, repeated actions, honest reflection, wise relationships, disciplined habits, and faithful persistence.
In my mentoring process, we spend an entire week on each chapter. The mentoree reads the chapter, takes notes, identifies what stood out, and comes prepared to tell me what he learned. During our weekly mentoring hour, I listen, ask questions, help him examine the ideas through a biblical worldview, and apply the principles to his actual life, relationships, work, character, and leadership.
I do not simply teach the book to him. The book helps us uncover what God may be developing within him.
That distinction matters. Personal growth is not self-worship, and reaching your potential is not the highest purpose of life. We grow so that we can more faithfully steward the life, abilities, relationships, influence, opportunities, and responsibilities God has entrusted to us. We grow because our character affects other people. We grow because those we lead deserve more than our undeveloped potential. We grow because faithful stewardship requires us to cultivate what God has placed in our hands.
This book will challenge some of the assumptions that may have quietly kept you from moving forward. It will ask whether you truly know yourself, whether you value yourself enough to invest in your development, whether your environment encourages growth, whether your daily practices support your aspirations, whether your character can sustain your ambitions, and whether you are willing to exchange comfort for transformation.
Some chapters will encourage you. Some will confront you. At least one will probably explain why you have been stuck in an area you could never quite understand. And several may give you language for truths you have sensed for years but could not clearly articulate.
Do not rush through it.
Read one chapter each week. Underline it. Write in the margins. Record what challenges you. Answer the questions honestly. Choose something specific to apply. Then discuss it with someone who loves you enough to encourage you—and tell you the truth.
Applied knowledge repeated consistently becomes transformation.
This is not simply one of the best books I know on personal growth. It establishes the foundation upon which the rest of my mentoring and leadership-training series is built. The books that follow will help you communicate, influence, lead, ask better questions, and develop others. But this book begins where all of that must begin:
With you.
If you want to change your trajectory, develop your potential, strengthen your character, enlarge your capacity, and become better prepared to love, serve, and lead others, begin here.
You do not have to finish now, but you do have to start now.

About The Author
John C. Maxwell is one of the most influential leadership teachers of our generation—a pastor at heart, a gifted communicator, and a lifelong student of personal growth and leadership. Through decades of writing, speaking, and equipping leaders around the world, John has demonstrated an uncommon ability to take profound truths and make them clear, memorable, and immediately useful. His work has influenced leaders in business, government, education, ministry, and nearly every sphere of life, but his greatest contribution may be the countless people he has inspired to grow intentionally so they can add greater value to others. John does not simply teach people how to achieve more; at his best, he challenges them to become more—and then use what they have learned to lift, serve, and develop the people around them.
As a member of the John Maxwell Team, I have read and taught from this book hundreds of times. It truly helps people begin the path toward serious, intentional growth. More than that, it can create a genuine paradigm shift in a reader’s life—especially when someone is mentored through it and helped to apply its principles personally with positive accountability.
